Which Is Accepted Where?

UK

Both IELTS Academic and PTE Academic are accepted by nearly all UK universities and for the UK Student Visa (Secure English Language Test / SELT approved versions). IELTS for UKVI and PTE Academic UKVI are the visa-specific versions required.

Canada

Both are accepted for university admissions. For the Student Direct Stream (SDS) visa, IELTS is the preferred test — PTE is not currently on the SDS eligible list. If you want the faster SDS processing, IELTS is the better choice.

Australia

Australia has one of the highest PTE acceptance rates in the world. PTE Academic is fully accepted for Australian student visas (subclass 500) and by all Australian universities including Go8 institutions.

USA

IELTS is more widely accepted at US universities. PTE Academic is accepted at many US institutions but not all. Check with your specific university.

Germany, Netherlands, Europe

Both are accepted at most European universities for English-taught programs. Check individual university requirements.

Which Test Is Easier — PTE or IELTS?

There is no single answer, but here are the differences students consistently notice:

PTE tends to be easier for students who:

  • Are comfortable typing fast (writing responses are typed, not handwritten)
  • Prefer AI-scored objectivity over examiner variability in Speaking
  • Are good at integrated tasks (multi-skill questions)
  • Want faster results and more test date flexibility
  • Do well with time-pressured, technology-based assessments

IELTS tends to be easier for students who:

  • Feel more comfortable speaking to a human examiner
  • Prefer a more traditional written format
  • Are strong in reading comprehension of long passages
  • Find the clear band scoring system easier to target
  • Are applying to Canada via SDS

Our Recommendation

Choose IELTS if:

  • You are applying to Canada via the Student Direct Stream
  • You prefer speaking to a human in the Speaking test
  • Your target US or European university specifies IELTS
  • You want the brand recognition of the world’s most widely recognised English test

Choose PTE if:

  • You are applying primarily to Australia or UK
  • You want faster results (often within 48 hours)
  • You are comfortable with computers and typing
  • You want more flexible test dates
  • You have been coached and prefer AI-scored speaking
